This Oscars 2020 Best Picture Nominees Honest Trailer is here. The Academy Awards are taking place earlier than usual this year, resulting in a shorter (and, many would agree, better-paced) race to Oscar night. In that time, some clear front-runners have emerged in most of the major Oscar categories ahead of the ceremony. Both Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix are heavily favored to win for their acting in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Joker, with Sam Mendes equally favored to win Best Director and potentially Picture for his WWI thriller 1917.
Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are also in the running for Best Picture, along with Little Women, Ford v. Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, Parasite, and The Irishman. It’s probably for the better Joker and The Irishman are long shots to win the prize, following all the hullabaloo after the latter’s director, Martin Scorsese, said he doesn’t consider superhero comic book movies to be “cinema”. All the same, Oscar night will mark a showdown (sorta) between comic book films and Scorsese, as Screen Junkies is here to remind everyone.
With the show just a few days away, Screen Junkies has gone and released their Honest Trailer for this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees online. You can check it out in the space below.
Most of the jokes in this Honest Trailer have been made many times by people throughout this awards season, be they about Ford v. Ferrari being the ultimate “dad movie”, The Irishman being too long for most people’s tastes, or Parasite being the terrific non-english language film you probably haven’t watched. That goes double for the gags involving Joker and The Irishman, which are nominated for eleven and ten Oscars, respectively. In truth, Scorsese has spoken very highly of Joker and Phoenix’s performance in the film, calling it “remarkable work”. Of course, the legendary director later admitted he’s yet to actually watch Joker as a whole, so take that as you will.
In many ways, this year’s Oscar snubs are just as interesting (perhaps more so) than the final nominees. As the Honest Trailer points out towards the end, films varying from folk horror thriller Midsommar to true story crime drama Hustlers, the Adam Sandler-led Uncut Gems and the autobiographical The Farewell and Honey Boy were ignored by the Academy, in spite of their widespread critical acclaim. Many have since taken the Academy to task for failing to nominate a single woman for Best Director (again) and overlooking so many deserving movies featuring people of color on and/or off-screen. It’s not quite #OscarsSoWhite this year, but it’s close enough for Screen Junkies to make several white people jokes in their Honest Trailer alone.
The 2020 Oscars ceremony will take place on Sunday evening, February 9.
