The focal point of Outlander, aside from the prevalent Scottish history and time-traveling, is the love story that will stand the test of time between Jamie and Claire Fraser.
Jamie won over the hearts of women everywhere with his charm, bravery, utter devotion and love for Claire, and, of course, his stunning good looks. While there is certainly more to his character than just his outward appearance, part of what makes Jamie who he is has to do with how he presents himself in the 18th-century.
His costumes throughout the past four seasons have been just as dynamic, historically accurate, and as gorgeous as Claire’s. This is precisely why we’re going to rank the 10 very best of them.
HIS FUR COAT FOR WINTER
Much like Claire’s famous green and white fur-trimmed coat in season 1 – that Bree ended up repurposing for her own use in season 4 – Jamie had his very own fur-trimmed ensemble to don in season 4 of the show.
With the increasingly cold weather in their new home of the North Carolina mountains, it was a necessity that he have a new, warmer coat such as this one. The fur trimmings combined with the stunning dark winter coat and his now-signature hat made for a great look for our favorite Scotsman.
PREPARED FOR HIS JOURNEY AHEAD
After Claire’s abrupt return to Jamie in season 3 of Outlander, they had some serious highs and lows initially. But once they got past the drama, their main goal was to save Young Ian – Jamie’s nephew – who had been kidnapped by pirates.
This was the costume chosen for Jamie as he prepared for his oceanic journey with Claire. The dark navy colors that make up this entire look including his pants, vest, coat, and scarf, look fantastic against his fair skin. His hat is in place yet again here and the silver buttons detailing his coat and vest bring everything together.
JAMIE’S PRINT SHOP LOOK
One of the most epic moments of season 3, and honestly, the entire series, was when Jamie and Claire reunited at his print shop. He was stunned quite literally when he saw her, and this is what he was wearing during that very moment.
Aside from the fact he looks the part of a printing press owner and operator with this entire costume, he also looks incredibly handsome. Kudos to costume designer Terry Dresbach for her attention to detail with his glasses.
This was the perfect way for Claire to see Jamie in his new life for the first time.
SEASON 3 JAMIE
As much as we love Jamie in his classic kilt look, we also like seeing him in more casual, modern looks such as this. Well, modern at least for the 1760s.
This was from a moment in season 3 during his twenty years apart from his beloved Claire. He was working on an estate with a noble family. While it was a devastating time period for him, he still looked as handsome as ever while still fitting in as a worker on this estate.
The riding pants with his olive green vest and brown coat is the perfect outfit for an afternoon horseback ride.
READY FOR BATTLE
The first two seasons of Outlander had a significant buildup to the infamous Battle of Culloden that killed many Scottish warriors in the battle against the Redcoats. Claire and Jamie worked tirelessly to keep this from happening but some things you just can’t control, as they have learned.
This was exactly how Jamie went into battle, with a look of fierce determination and his standard Mackenzie kilt and white undershirt. Armed with his weaponry, he looks like he is prepared to end this once and for all, and the costume definitely helps set that mood as well.
HIS WEDDING NIGHT
This may be one of his more simple costumes throughout the entire series but it is still one of the more significant of them all. This night – Jamie and Claire’s wedding night – was the beginning of their epic love story. That alone also kicked off the rest of the series’ events that we have watched unfold.
His white wedding undershirt with his Fraser kilt was a more casual version of what he wore to their actual wedding. This was the moment they slowed things down and began to truly get to know one another before things became much more intimate between them for the first time. It was a tender moment, to be sure.
FRANCE MEETS SCOTLAND
Some of our favorite costumes on Outlander ever came out of season 2 of the show. Primarily during the first half of season 2 when Jamie, Claire and Murtagh were in France.
During their time in Paris, both Jamie and Claire wore the most gorgeous costumes that Terry Dresbach expertly created. The accuracy of the time period combined with the gorgeous fabrics and designs really brought you to the Paris of that time.
In this beautiful combination of countries, we see Jamie sporting his classic Scottish kilt with a more Paris-inspired waistcoat, ruffled undershirt, and taupe embroidered coat. It showed the two parts of Jamie coming together in one ensemble, and it was wonderful.
A SCOTTISH WARRIOR
During the Jacobite Rebellion that we saw unfolding over the course of the first two seasons, we saw many different costumes donned by Jamie. This look, in particular, was what he wore while training other Jacobites for the upcoming battles in season 2.
It is the perfect depiction of Jamie. It shows his strength, bravery, and Scottish roots all in one ensemble. He’s wearing his famous kilt, a beautiful olive green waistcoat, and a plaid jacket which is brought all together with his belt holding his dirk in place.
He’s getting ready for battle and it shows.
A VELVET COAT FIT FOR A KING
Who could forget the moment Jamie saw Claire in her jaw-dropping red dress for the French Court at Versailles? While that was a wonderful moment from both the books and the show that showcased how stunning Claire was in this red ballgown, Jamie looked just as gorgeous in his deep teal/green-colored velvet coat.
Paired with his white undershirt, brown waistcoat, riding pants, and knee-high boots, it was an understated look until you see the lavish coat that tops it all off. The color of the coat brought out Jamie’s beautiful blue eyes and fiery red hair perfectly, too.
JAMIE’S WEDDING KILT
The number one spot on this list of Jamie’s most iconic costumes was, of course, reserved for his wedding look. He put so much care into the details of both he and Claire’s ensembles for that day and it really showed.
He made sure to have his Fraser tartan rather than the MacKenzie, though they are similar since they are from the same area. It was important to him to represent that part of himself and his family on that day.
Designer Terry Dresbach also said about his look: “We gave him a beautiful diamond stock pin, and did the most exquisite embroidery on the cuffs of his shirt. Just to get a little glint of metallic to pick up his pin, and Claire’s dress.” Combining those fine details with his blue waistcoat and teal coat made for a perfectly gorgeous wedding look for our fair Jamie.
